‘This platform allows us to literally save lives’

The Municipality of Rotterdam supports Rotterdam initiators with a progressive plan for the city with CityLab010. A total of 49 initiatives together received 3 million euros in 2021. We would like to put the spotlight on the three Life Sciences & Health initiatives. In part 2: 010Nurse, an idea first created by Nicole van ’t Wout, founder and director of the blendIN solutions company. This initiative received a 75,000 euro grant.

010NURSE is a closed digital platform which connects nurses and other healthcare professionals. They can use the platform to easily and quickly share top quality information and best practices with each other. Nurses have quick and easy access to knowledge which helps them to do their work thanks to this platform. This should translate into better healthcare for Rotterdam residents. Entrepreneur (and former primary school teacher) Nicole van ’t Wout, founder and director of blendIN solutions, explains the initiative.

HOW DID THE IDEA FOR 010NURSE FIRST COME ABOUT?

Nicole: ‘We set up blended (a combination of online and offline, ed.) learning processes for (medical) education and SME’s from blendIN solutions. One of our solutions is the Wisbits learning innovation. This stands for bits of wisdom. In other words: small chunks of wisdom. We know many organisations have an enormous treasure chest of knowledge at their disposal. However, that knowledge is often “hidden” in the people who work there. This treasure chest therefore remains closed to many people, both internally and externally. And that’s a real shame. Wisbits allows organisations to independently develop a blended learning culture or learning paths, with mobile learning as an important pillar.

‘Initially, we mainly developed Wisbits for companies. The idea arose to use this tool for healthcare during the COVID-19 crisis. We concluded: the ability to quickly share top quality information with the right healthcare professionals is essential in order to be able to provide adequate care. We have noticed that information is currently very fragmented during conversations with healthcare parties. And statically packed away in extensive training courses, which often require a long development time. We saw an opportunity to use digital tools which will make sharing knowledge easy and fast. And which will dynamically move along with urgent context and acute learning questions. Like in a crisis situation like COVID-19. 010NURSE was born.’

HOW DOES THIS SOLUTION MAKE THE CARE PROVIDED MORE EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT?

‘Rotterdam healthcare experts are connected with nurses via 010NURSE. This allows them to easily and quickly share top quality information about healthcare innovations, skills, work processes and best practices. This can be done in the form of mobile learning, such as short texts, videos and photos. An example is the preventive prescription of blood thinners in thrombosis patients with a COVID-19 infection. But also the insight that Covid patients are best treated lying on their stomachs. A buddy system was also created on some ICU’s, in which an ICU nurse was supported by a normal nurse.

‘New insights like this are created in hospital A, but often have to be in the news before hospital B and care institution C start using them. And only after a doctor explains the process and the innovation via a loan structure. That time simply isn’t available most of the time, especially not when we’re in the midst of a crisis. Healthcare professionals who have faster access to that knowledge will be able to easily share that knowledge. This will undoubtedly help Rotterdam residents, as they’ll receive faster and better care. 010NURSE can literally save lives according to the Citylab010 jury. That’s right; every new insight and every minute of time saved was crucial, especially at the start of the COVID-19 crisis.

‘The shared knowledge can also be a simple healthcare hack, which ensures, for example, that nurses suffer from fewer back problems. This, in turn, results in reduced absence levels. Obviously hugely important, given the workload. 010NURSE also offers a platform for healthcare professionals. It allows for more interaction and they are given the opportunity to profile themselves as 010NURSE experts and co-developers. That affects the profession’s self-confidence and image.’

HOW INNOVATIVE IS THE 010NURSE IDEA?

‘The jury referred to 010NURSE as a completely new way of sharing knowledge, applying innovations and providing on the spot care. Our solution also allows us to contribute to a new, future-proof economy. It’s both digital and sustainable, if you consider the quality and affordability of healthcare. The speed of sharing knowledge, without the involvement of expensive developers or other intermediaries, is also innovative for healthcare.’

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THE 75,000 EURO GRANT FROM CITYLAB010?

‘We are very happy with the amount we’ve received. It will certainly result in some fantastic progress. The Wisbits technology is already available, but we still have to give the platform a 010NURSE look and feel. We’ll really get to work with the amount granted. We’ll be doing so in collaboration with Create4Care. This organisation, a collaboration between Erasmus MC and Hogeschool Rotterdam (minor care technology), helps to solve practical problems through smart technical innovations. We can map out the relevant needs by entering into discussions with Create4Care and with nurses from Erasmus MC. What kind of information would nurses like to see on the platform? And in what form? We will subsequently fill the platform together based on this and help them on their way.’

WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU EXPECT DURING THE DEVELOPMENT OF 010NURSE?

‘Setting up any new product or service is a challenge. Our advantage is that we always work bottom up. The nurses themselves determine how they fill in the platform. You will gain their support and increase the chances of it actually being used by involving them from the very start. The main challenge is to ensure knowledge is shared on a regular basis. And that there are people in all departments who take ownership and inspire others to use 010NURSE. We are very hopeful that this will work. It should start working when they realise the platform makes their work easier and that they’re learning something.’

WHERE DO YOU HOPE TO BE IN A YEAR’S TIME?

‘We are now starting with one Erasmus MC department. I hope to see 010NURSE being used in all departments when I walk through the hospital in a year’s time. I also hope that 010NURSE will be brought to the attention of, or will already be used by, other Rotterdam hospitals and healthcare institutions. There’s every chance that will happen; many parties have already shown an interest – partly because of the attention for the Citylab010 grant. I think it would be really cool if different healthcare organisations could share knowledge with each other through our tool. All for the greater purpose: better healthcare for the people of Rotterdam.’
